A NOTE FROM PALMA:
My favorite souvenir is the kind found on the ground: a dried leaf, a stone, something encountered in meaningful moments. Last winter, I had an opportunity to collect ceramic shards and driftwood on the shore of ancient Lake Biwa in Japan. For an hour, I was totally absorbed in the sound of the waves, the rays of sun that periodically hid behind clouds, and the feeling of lake-polished fragements of pottery in my hand. At home, I like to lay these pieces out on different surfaces and let them take me back to the sight, smell, and sound. This is how this painting came about.
